In class this week, we watched a video about invisibility. The video is called "What's invisible? More than you think." by John Lloyd. The first thing it mentions is everything that matters is invisible, except everything and matter. I began to think about people because that is what matters to me. We know people are made up of cells, and that's matter. But we don't know what matters to them. We only see the surface and what's on the outside of things, not what's on the inside. Many people in history have felt as if their voices were not heard. Whether it was because of their race, culture, gender, or age. They felt invisible.
Throughout history, women all over the world have not had a voice in picking our future leaders of the country until 1920. In 1920, the U.S. passed the 19th amendment allowing women the right to vote. They didn't get many of the same rights as men. The U.S. Constitution granted women the right to vote, also known as woman suffrage, that began to reach a national level in 1848. Now, women everywhere can express how they feel. They can have the freedom to have a say and make a difference.
Over the years, many kids have felt invisible because they do not feel like they are being heard by adults. This is also related to one of our other books we are reading in class, To Kill a Mockingbird. We determined the narrator and the protagonist is an unreliable narrator. This is because of her young age(6). I could also relate this to my own life in the sense that I am still young and sometimes people underestimate me or my intellect. I may have good ideas but sometimes adults are too caught up in their world to understand that I have an opinion too. All kids have opinions. We have voices that need to be heard.
In addition, many times people are too worried about tomorrow, they are too worried about the future, that they do not live for today. I have learned this from experience. I learned to live for today. Today could be invisible to people because they are just passing through it. They are too busy, too stressed, too worried about what might happen to even enjoy today. Today is something we do not see because it is the future which means no one can see what will happen. Therefore, we do not understand it. One may plan for specific things to happen but they might not always happen. We can not always understand why things don't go as planned. Some people might call it fate or destiny that things go a certain way. Those are things we will never understand. Today is also the present. Some people tend to forget that it is the present because they are too busy worried about everything else to relax and enjoy.
What is today? I don't know because I can't see what will happen in the future and I will never understand why things in the future happen.
