Expression. How do we express who we truly are? Is it hard to express who we are in today's society? What is expression? Expression is defined as making a your feelings and thoughts known.
Expression has been related to everything we've been talking about all week. We read a poem by Mark Jarman called "Ground Swell." Also, in the current novel we are reading, To Kill a Mockingbird, the main character, Scout, expresses herself through her actions when she does not like something and we watched a TED Talk video about people who did very unique styles of dance. In "Ground Swell," it talks about a caged bird that wants to be free. This could be a way for the writer to express how he feels about something.
People express themselves in all different ways. It could be through art, music, writing, or dance. Dance has been a very common way to express one's self. In class, we watched a TED talk video about different people doing very unique styles of dance. In a way, I felt as if they expressed themselves through their dance. It showed a little bit about who each one of them are. It showed one side of their personality. Dance can be a statement of who they are or what they stand for.
I mentioned in my last post how people are so busy in modern times. I think it is somewhat hard for people to truly express who they really are because many people are too busy to just stop and notice. People could get too caught up in the craziness of life to see the effort someone tries to do to express how they feel. They are too busy to even think of ways to express themselves, maybe even without using words.
People may think you need to do something big and it needs to be publicly noticed for you to express yourself, but the truth is, it doesn't. Your art that expresses your joy in life does not need to be in display at a museum. Your poems or stories do not need to be published for the whole world to read. Everything could just be for yourself. A lot of the world's famous poems or artwork was not meant to be famous.
Expression has one definition (in this case) but has a million other ways it could be used. What I learned this week is how many different ways people express themselves. Their voices may be silent but their feelings and innermost thoughts will always be heard.
