PC: darkness
We started off this week with the short story, "Lamb to the Slaughter," which started off with a very sweet, nice, caring, wife who loves her husband very much. Mary Maloney catered to her husband, Patrick's, every need. She had pure love for him. Or so we thought. When Patrick told her he was going to leave her, she murdered him with a leg of lamb. After my class had a discussion, I was had a small discussion with my teacher and my peers. A question came up that struck me; "Is there a darkness in all of us?"
There is a darkness in all of us. There is always even an iota of darkness in us. Even the nicest people could be capable for doing the worse things. There may be a darkness in all of us, but it is up to us if we want act upon it. The world is full of light and dark, good and evil. The world is also full of human beings who have flaws. A flaw everyone has is the darkness inside of them. The evil in them. It is different when the evil is just a thought and when it becomes an action. The real darkness lies within the action. If one just has a thought that wasn't very nice it's just a thought. It has no real substance in it.
I believe with bad comes good and with darkness comes light. Although one has darkness in them, the light could overpower it. There are many temptations in the world that tempt us, as human beings, to do the action. Jesus was tempted by Satan during the 40 days he fasted but he never did anything. Jesus is the light. The light will always overpower the darkness anywhere. The ray of sunshine and hope will shine through everyone.
In class, we had a fishbowl discussion whether the murder in the story was a crime of passion or premeditated. Many people said it was a crime of passion because although he told her he was leaving her, she was still going to make him dinner. She revolved her entire life around him. She loved him very much but the feelings were not mutual. Many people said it was premeditated because of the specific way she held the leg of lamb and the fact that she went into the living room with the lamb. I still believe it was a crime of passion because she still loved him and admired him.
