This week in class, we watched a TED Talk video about the story of how the creator of Story Corps created it. I found the video very interesting and I was very intrigued by the title of the video. The title was “Everyone Around You Has a Story to Tell” by Dave Isay. Isay started his presentation by telling his story of how he found out his father was gay. He then began to talk about interviews. How he interviewed people who are rarely seen by the media and wrote a book about it. He never knew how much an interview could mean to someone until the day he went back to a man he interviewed and showed him his interview in the book. He then ran out screaming “I exist! I exist!” Isay wanted to give people a chance to be listened to by these interviews. So he built a booth where anyone could interview someone talking about their life. Most people thought of the interview like if this were their last conversation with the person, what would they want to ask or say to that person. They would talk for about an hour and have one of the most intimate conversations with one of the people they love and admire the most. They then expanded this for anyone around the world to do.
Reflecting back on this video, I think Dave Isay had a great idea. This was a chance for people to come together and bond. This was a chance for people to show each other how much they love each other. Each interview someone has brings those people closer together. They could ask the deepest questions that they’ve always wanted to ask. They could ask something that instantly brings back memories or feelings someone buried deep in their thoughts many years ago. The interviews have the power to become a memory you can cherish. You have a recording of their voice. When one passes on, we tend to remember faint memories. But now, one of the best memories someone could ever have will be with you and live on forever. The memory of a grandmother could live for generations and generations so that even their grandchildren in the next century can know who their grandmother is. It is very true that each and everyone in our daily lives has a story to tell.
